22 plus 44 Days to a Prayer Ritual Before Advent
In my tradition, we spend the four weeks before Christmas (Advent) preparing our hearts and minds for the coming of the Christ child. It’s a time to adopt some sort of spiritual practice to help bring us closer to God and combat the ever growing chaos of the secular holiday season. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, but let’s face it, the holidays are not the best time to try and adopt a spiritual practice.
This year, why not up your game and take the time to develop a new prayer practice that will be fully in place BEFORE the holiday rush begins. Old wisdom, based on 1960s research, suggests that it takes 21 days to get into the habit of doing something, but more recent research tells us that it takes at least 66 days for most people to form a lasting practice.
Over 22 days, you’ll get the tools and guidance you need to develop a prayer practice that works best for you (including where, when and how you will pray) and then for the next 44 days, you’ll get the support, encouragement and accountability you need to keep it going.
We’ll start September 13 and end (at least the formal process) on November 17, just before Thanksgiving week.
