Breath Prayer

This is one of the prayers we’re doing in our 22 plus 44 Days to a Personal Prayer Practice. In the midst of hectic days and troubled times, I’ve found this one particularly helpful, so I thought I’d share with everyone.

Breath Prayer
There are several ways to do breath prayer, and we’ll go through several types over the next few days. The goal of this prayer is simply to experience God. Well, there’s nothing simple about experiencing God, but the point is that this prayer has no “agenda” other than experiencing God.

Find a comfortable position. Make sure phones are turned off. Like the silent prayer, choose a time limit (5, 10 or 15 minutes) and set a timer so that you don’t have to keep checking on where you are in your prayer.

Express to God your desire to experience God in this prayer.

And now, this is key–let go of any expectations of what it means to experience God. Got it? No expectations.

Begin to breathe in and out deeply and fully–through your nose if you are able.

Focus your attention on your breath. Feel the life-giving air fill your lungs and blow back into the atmosphere.

When your time of breath prayer is over, finish by thanking God for the breath of life.

When you are finished, consider:

what you experienced in the breath
how you may have encountered God
how you feel following the breath prayer

Happy breathing, everyone!
