Be Not Afraid–Day 10
For God did not give us a Spirit of fear, but of love and power and sound mind (or self-control…depending on your translation). 2 Timothy 1:7.
Don’t tell anyone, but this is one of the few Bible verses I can quote scripture and verse by memory. Though I can tell you where to find things in the Bible and tell all the stories and paraphrase a good many verses, I didn’t grow up in a tradition where we had sword drills or memory verses each week. But this verse is one of the handful that I know by heart.
I am reminded that God did not create me to live in fear, but to live loved and being loved, to feel powerful and in control of my own brain. This verse is true in the face of fears and anxieties that live in my own head and for those fears that have a physical presence in real life.
If you are feeling powerless and out-of-control because fear and anxiety are ruling your life, by all means, turn to God in prayer…and then use your power to reach out and get help. If you struggle with how to talk about your anxiety or what you are feeling, our good friends in British Columbia have created a great resource at AnxietyBC. There is great power is being able to name our fears and getting help to deal with them.
If there is someone in your life that makes you feel unsafe, please know that you have the power to reach out and to tell someone. If you do not have a parent, pastor, teacher or friend that you feel safe enough with to share your fears, call 1800-799-SAFE(7233). There is help and hope on the line.
The scariest day of the year is a the perfect day to take the steps you need to stop living in fear. May power of prayer, the courage to reach out and speak out and the desire to live in to becoming the fearless person God created you to be, be with you on this All Hallows Eve.
