Six Xmas Movies that Pass the Bechdel Test

In order to pass Bechdel test, a movie must have three things:

  1. Two named women characters
  2. Who have a conversation with each other
  3. That is not about a man

You may or may not be surprised that Christmas movies that pass the Bechdel test are hard to come by, but here are five. (note to Netflix and Amazon Prime: get it together, you aren’t streaming any of these Bechdel-approved flicks.)

Godmothered

The latest movie on this list hit Disney+ just last week. It is a delightfully charming modern-day fairytale that does not rely on a prince to save the day.

Almost Christmas

A big and (surprise!) dysfunctional family gathers at their parents home on the first Christmas after their mother’s death. Stick with this one that goes a little overboard with the number of large personalities in one family. It’s surprisingly heartwarming.

Stream it Hulu or rent on iTunes or Amazon.

Happy Christmas

The screw-up younger sister moves in with her brother and his family and throws their life completely out of whack–just in time for Christmas.

Stream on Hulu

The Last Holiday

Hard working dreamer played by Queen Latifah mistakenly thinks she has a terminal illness. She sells everything and cashes in her savings for one last holiday at a grand European resort.

Catch it on AMC or rent on ITunes or Amazon

Little Women

The classic Louisa May Alcott story of four sisters in Civil War-era New England.

Rent it on ITunes or Amazon

A Christmas Without Snow

Going back to 1981, this made-for-tv movie features Michael Learned (Ma on Little House) and the great John Houseman in a story about an amateur church choir’s journey to perform the Messiah for Christmas Eve.

It’s free on YouTube
