The Song We Never Have to Sing

The musical Kinky Boots is set to close in April after an impressive six-year run on Broadway.  There are a number of show-stopping, high energy songs in th show–the story of how a shoemaker and a drag queen save a business (and themselves) by making boots strong enough to support men who dress like women.

But this is my favorite song from the show. In the production, it’s mainly drag queen Lola (roll originated by Billy Porter) who sings the song, but the song belongs to shoemaker Charley as well. Neither one has become the person his father wanted him to be. Charley’s lack of business acumen and Lola’s love of high heels have caused rifts.

We can be grateful that, as Christians, this is not a song we ever have to sing. Even if we have fathers who are less-than-proud of who we’ve become, we know we have a Heavenly Father/Mother/Creator who claims us just as we are.

Romans 8 affirms that we are “the children of God” (8:14). 1 John 3:1 adds, “See what love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”  And Romans 8 goes on to say that there is “nothing that can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers or height or depth, or any other thing that is created” (8:38).

We are our Father’s children–and there’s nothing that we (or anyone else) can do to change that.  Thanks be to God!
