A New Mission–Affordable Insulin

Doubting Believer is an experiment in what an online, progressive, inclusive Christian community can look like and be. We have an e-mail list, a FB page, FB groups and online classes. But one thing we haven’t had is a common mission.

I’ve been thinking and praying on and generally searching for what that might be. The world’s problems are many and great. In what mission might this small group of God’s people be able to agree, invest and actually affect change?

Insulin. Affordable insulin. While the powers that be will most likely be debating and arguing about what health insurance for all looks like until about two years after Jesus comes back, affordable insulin is something that could happen in our lifetime. It could happen this year..or at least next. And it’s something that should happen.

Insulin is a necessity for many who are living with diabetes, but people are dying because they can’t afford the life-saving medicine they need. No one who relies on insulin should ever have to wonder how they will pay for their next dose.

Are there other life-saving medicines that people need and cannot afford? Are there other issues and people that need attention and advocacy? Of course, but for the next few months, Doubting Believer will be bringing you ways you can advocate for affordable insulin.

To kick it off, I invite you to sign the Stand Up for Affordable Insulin petition. Look for more on affordable insulin initiatives in the days and weeks to come.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
