Rituals at Home–Happy Birthday to You

People are coming up with great ways to celebrate birthdays in these shelter-in-place Covid-19 times. Zoom parties, drive-by parades, balloon bouquets and surprise lawn decorations are all being employed to celebrate those special days.

But like everything else in these Covid-19 times, not getting to gather in person with the people we love is a bummer.

Here’s a short ritual you can do at home to celebrate you. I’ve attached a handy PDF reference at the end of the post that you can print out.

Gather items that will help you remember the year gone by–calendars, photos, souvenirs, mementos, etc. If any of these things are on your phone, set it to do not disturb so you aren’t distracted by notifications or calls. Have a piece of paper and a writing utensil at the ready.

You’ll also want one candle (or if you want to go big, a candle for each year of your life) . Have a piece of cake (or some other treat) and an indulgent beverage of your choice on hand as well.

Light the candle (s).

Reflect over the past year. Finish these statements.

I am grateful for…

I found wonder in…

I learned…

Now think about the year ahead and finish these statements

I hope that…

I promise to…

I need…

The Bible tells us that we all have gifts granted to us by our Creator. What are your gifts? How would you like to share them in the year ahead?

Scripture also tells us that all good things come from God. What good gifts would you like to receive from God this year?

After you’ve reflected on these questions and (hopefully) written them down, raise a toast, enjoy a bite and say a prayer for the year ahead. May it be a blessed one for you and may you be a blessing to those you encounter along the way.

…and be sure to blow out those candles.
