Feel Good Friday #114

Every week Doubting Believer brings you things to read, watch or listen to that are sure to make you smile. Because we all could use a little good news.

I’m into my third year of the longest spiritual discipline I’ve ever maintained–posting stories of Good News every Friday. Lately it seems as if the universe is just daring me to come up with anything good to share in the midst of natural disasters, the COVID crisis, racial injustice, economic hardships and growing violence in a country divided. But of course, the truth is that there are always bad things happening in our world–more of us are just aware of it now.

However, there is always, always Good News to share, because not only is God good all the time, people can be pretty awesome, too. My search for Good News is my weekly reminder of that truth, and I hope it is for you as well.

Run, Fauja, run!

A new book about the world’s oldest marathon runner is the first by a major publisher to center on a Sikh character. Not only is it a great story of perseverance and endurance, it combats ageism and introduces kids to the Sikh community. (Fun fact: there is a large Sikh community in London. When we lived there for a year, and I was in the city and needed help finding my way around, I knew that anyone in the familiar turban was a safe person to approach. One of the reasons they are worn is to be an outward symbol and a reminder of the values they hold–that include uplifting humanity and serving all. )

These kids today…

…are doing awesome things for their neighbors.

Surfing for Senegal

In another life, I was the marketing director for a surf and beach trade show, so I still loosely follow the industry. I was so excited to see that Senegal has its first professional female surfer who is encouraging other young women to take up the sport. And Kahdje Sambe is one of the few women of color on the pro surfing tour. Why is this good news? Because representation matters.

When billionaires bake birthday cakes.

Get some rest.

Talk to God.

Do something fun.

Connect with people you love.

Take radically good care of yourself. The world needs you.
