For weeks now, every Friday I’ve posted things to watch, read or listen to that are sure to make you smile, because we all could use a little good news. But today instead of feel good Friday, I’m inviting you to Feel…Good Friday.
Because we can’t celebrate Easter until we FEEL Good Friday
Connecting with the crucified Christ is a pre-requisite to celebrating the Risen Christ.
There’s just no way around of sharing the good news of Easter without talking about the death of Christ.
There is no new life without death. No empty tomb without the cross.
But make no mistake, Jesus didn’t suffer FOR our sins
Jesus died because of our sins
Jesus died because he challenged the power of those in authority
Jesus died because he disrupted the status quo
Jesus died because he refused to stay silent in the face of oppression.
He could have saved himself
He could have walked back some statements
He could have played ball with the powers that be
He could have pulled a Houdini-style miracle and freed himself from the whole mess
But he didn’t.
Not for us
But with us.
Not for us
But because of us
Jesus died to show us just how far God’s love for us will go
All the way to the cross
All the way through the suffering
All the way to the grave.
John 15:13 tells us that There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
Jesus death on the cross is God’s love in action
But that doesn’t mean that the cross isn’t brutal and ugly
It is indeed painful and gruesome
And it is upsetting and unsettling to contemplate and consider
But we must Feel Good Friday before we can truly celebrate Easter
We must weep at the cross before we can rejoice at the empty tomb
Crucifixion comes before resurrection
Death comes before new life.
Today, may we truly Feel Good Friday.
