A Prayer (Plea) for the Planet

We really blew it, didn’t we? You gave us this good and green earth, and we have squandered it.

You asked us to care for it, and we abused it.

It’s not that we aren’t awestruck.

We’ve stared into the vastness of the ocean with our toes in the sand.

We’ve marveled at the proverbial majesty of the mountains.

We’ve been nourished by the gifts of the ground. We’ve feasted on its bounty.

We chose to pretend that all of our taking could never be more than Your earth could give.

We underestimated the earth’s fragility in the face of our insatiable consumption and insistence on comfort.

We are shortsighted people who can’t see past our own lives to the future of our children’s children’s children.

Change our minds, motivate our hands and move our feet, O God. Help us to heal your earth. Soften the blow as we surrender to the discomfort that we will, no doubt, encounter.

Push us to become restorers of your good and wonderful creation so that generations to come will be blessed by its abundance.

Amen.
