A Prayer for Labor Day
Note: I’ve been writing a version of this prayer for several years now. Here is the 2023 version.
Maker of all things,
We pray for those who are overworked and overwrought.
For those who are overwhelmed and just plain over it.
For those who feel like there are not enough hours in the day and for those who fill their hours with that which does not feel like enough.
For those who have lost work, those who never to seem to leave work and those who are desperately seeking work.
For those who work in spaces and places where their own health and safety are jeopardized.
For those for whom home and work have morphed into one giant glob of chaos, confusion and conflicting schedules.
For those who feel they have no control over the number of hours they work and for those who choose to work more than they should.
God of justice and of rest
Energize the weary.
Lift up the worn down.
Protect the vulnerable.
Change the hearts of those who profit mightily from the work of underpaid laborers (that would be most of us)
Remind us that we cannot bear fruit on our own and help us to find Sabbath rest.
